Shannon Shorr's Blog

Oct 27, 2009

Hi everyone. It's been some 19 days since I last blogged. I'm trying to remember what all has been going on since I last posted.

Let me start by sharing this really fun link of a charity project my Dad is doing. The former West Point gymnast is doing a headstand in a different location everyday for an entire year to help raise money for The American Cancer Society. Please check it out, follow it and please donate! You can find the site at www.theheadstandproject.com

My trip to Austin to hang out with Adam over fall break was a really good time. We ate lots of great food, drank a lot of beer, and attended the Texas vs. Colorado game. My close poker friends and I have a rule amongst ourselves that anytime one of us is attending a game he can call on any of the other guys and they must book his action for whichever side of the bet he wants (vig free), shall he wish to bet the game. Adam and I took the opportunity to bet Texas -33 or something silly. Texas was outright down by a touchdown at the half, but they did give us a tiny sweat by winning by 25ish.

It's fall break at The University of Alabama. I'm in the terminal in Birmingham headed to Austin, Texas to hang out with my buddy Adam Geyer. Technically fall break is only Thursday and Friday, but I've got this cool ass marketing teacher who decided to give us today off as well. We'll definitely go to the Texas vs Colorado football game on Saturday night, but aside from that we have no real plans. I hope to eat some of Austin's great food and throw down about 100 Shiners before the weekend is over.

My weekend visit with my Mom in Williamsburg was enjoyable. Friday I arrived and took a tour of the military base where she holds a civilian job. While on base, I dropped my iPhone in a parking lot and shattered the face :( I got the 3G S now though and it's pretty sweet. Later, we took a ghost tour in the heart of Williamsburg and then grabbed a couple pitchers of beer at this draft house called Green Leafe Cafe. Saturday we watched SEC football all day. Bama improved to 5-0. Sunday we checked out this cool attraction called Presidents Park. Basically, it was these 20 foot monuments of each of the first 42 men who served as President of The United States. Definitely check it out if you're in the area. Later, we visited the historic Jamestown settlement, and then hit a Greek festival followed by an Art festival.

I made it back to Birmingham and just had to endure Tuesday classes which included a test in my entrepreneurship class. I'm pretty sure I did well on it. We're now done with 8 weeks of classes. More updates soon.

It's early Friday morning, and as I write this I'm one of the few people in the Birmingham airport. I'm en route to Williamsburg, VA where my mom currently lives. I'll fly into this cool town nearby called Newport News. I'm really looking forward to seeing my Mom as it's been some 2 months or so since I last got to see her.

Since my last update I attended the Alabama vs Arkansas game in Tuscaloosa. Bama looked fantastic, won 35-7, and improved to 4-0. In the last 6 years or so, I've only missed a few Alabama home football games. This one was extremely memorable as it's one of the few games I can remember where we got absolutely soaked by rain. The rain let up in the first quarter, but it made for an interesting time. The team has a ton of depth this year and has sort of answered any questions people might have had. A lot of top teams have fallen, too, so maybe just maybe this will be Bama's year for a shot at the National title. Other than that, I played the online tournaments last Sunday and they went miserably. I mincashed the warmup and bricked the other 15 or so tournaments in which I participated. I really feel like I should contribute some poker content to this blog, as I see the traffic declining :)

We're also now done with 7 weeks of school. In general, I'm pretty miserable during the weekdays and just try to grind through the classes. When I graduate in May, I'd planned on putting some resumes out because I felt like I owed it to myself to atleast see what would be out there with my degree (lol at getting a job in this economy).  I might save myself the time though, as I remember being mostly happy while playing poker professionally. If the corporate 8-5 world is anywhere near as boring as classes, I don't think I'd enjoy it.
